Nowadays the term is used to describe a piece of office furniture which has a long flat top, and they often contain file drawers, a kneehole, and computer accessories.
A credenza is traditionally a buffet, sideboard, or bookcase, especially one without legs. The word is an Italian one deriving from medieval Latin 'credentia' meaning trust (possibly from the fact that food and drink were placed on a sideboard prior to tasting by a servant to ensure the absence of poison).
